A veterinarian can do many things.....

Thanks to Dr.S.Sudhodanan, people of Elappully Panchayat could celebrate their winning the prestigious Green Kerala Express Social Reality Show prize. From among the 152 panchayats contested for the prize, Elappully emerged as the winner at the grand finale held on 27th July 2010 at Thiruvananthapuram. The cash prize of Rs.1 crore was received by the President of the Panchayat and Dr. Sudhodanan from Sri. V.S. Achuthanandan, the Chief Minister of Kerala.
One hundred and fifty two panchayats contested with their achievements in the developmental areas, ranging from dairy farming, health care projects, organic farming, village courts etc. Elappully Panchayat with a majority of marginal farmers, most of them in debt traps, had undertaken a dairy project to enhance milk production. With the active involvement of Dr. Sudhodanan from the conceptualization to the implementation, Elappully panchayat had achieved a fourfold increase in milk production. From just 2400 litres of milk per day, the production has reached 12000 litres per day. The financial turnover of the farmers is estimated at Rs.7.5 crore last year. The farmers are supplying milk to households, hotels and other establishments with their ‘Elappully Farm Fresh Milk’. They have also initiated programme to launch other value added products. The number of farmers involved in the dairy sector rose to 2800 from 1400 in just two years.
The Panchayat assisted women to set up 623 dairy units each with two cows. Of them, 233 were in general category, 270 were SC familis and 70 were Kudumbasree units. The rest were 50 individuals under various schemes of the District Panchayat. Elappully Panchayat also began fodder cultivation in 50 acres of land and set up a model veterinary hospital.
Similarly, many other vets initiated such massive projects for the sector. Veterinarians of Kannadi Panchayat of Palakkad district and Sooranad North Panchayat of Kollam district are on the toppers' list.
Congratulations to you, Dr. Sudhodanan and vets of Kannadi and Sooranad North panchayats. Keep running.

Congrats for the new initiative, ‘The Vet Concerns’. Elappully Panchayat and Dr Sudhodanan are inspiring examples for all the vets. Hope all the panchayats will now give more importance to animal husbandry projects. ‘Vidharbha’ package is the best animal husbandry project I have seen. The latest component is Pregnant Animal Feeding Programme. Thirty thousand pregnant cows were given 1kg cattle feed for the last 100 days of pregnancy free of cost in Palakkad district last year. There is an increase one and a half liters of milk per animal per day (average). The farmers are looking forward to the schemes. - Dr Maria
