The first Vice chancellor of the first veterinary university of Kerala was sacked today by the Governor of Kerala on the recommendation of the Cabinet. Dr B Ashok IAS, Vice Chancellor of the recently formed Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) is reported to be removed on administrative convenience.
According to Manorama News on 21st October and Malayala Manorama daily on 22nd October,Dr Ashok was sacked for his alleged derogatory and demeaning comments on the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala. Sri.K. Jayakumar, Additional Chief Secretary is put on the additional charge of the Vice Chancellor of the university but Dr. Ashok is not assigned any new job. The controversial article appeared in Malayala Manorama on 10th October 2011.

Initiatives taken by Dr.
Initiatives taken by Dr. Ashok were not only bold, but unique. Wish he got the time and space to shape the new university and set the standards. Only if the track is now set right and tight in academics, research and extension can this new university excel and shine 25 or 50 years down the lane. All new projects envisaged should be in peril by now. Will our politicians ever be able to think above petty instantaneous instincts?! Sadly, gone are the days when we had political visionaries who respected academics. Many international collaborations were on the anvil and Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University will not be seen a credible partner, if this be the first picture we present. Wish the Vice Chancellor will be reinstated and given all powers to start off again.

Letter to Dr B Ashok
Dr B Ashok, you have shown guts and a spine made of steel.You did not buckle under pressure which came from all quarters including staff, teachers and students, but you stood for those values you believed, in the overall interest of the nascent organization you were nurturing. Pity that the politicians and their spineless IAS croonies could not bear stern efficiency that they have never seen. Your departure is a loss for a budding university which lost someone who could have made a solid foundation. The professors and stafff would be equally happy too so that they can return to their old routine of tea-chat-tea. When a world class educational system is a far cry and when Kerala lagging clearly in all parameters of educational quality, due to politicization and apathy, incidences like this proves that this state is destined for doom. Take away that literacy and living standard bullshit, the educational system of the state is rotting.Dr Ashok, go back with your head held high and do the same in your next appointment. I remember how they tried to bury Rishiraj Singh IPS in such a nondescript agency like Anti-piracy cell and how he like a Tiger, took on the Piracy Mafia. Now that you are removed for administrative convenience, show them that you cannot be "conveniently" bend. Let me reassure you that there are people who have not lost hope, backing you and your voice will be taken afar through the social media....Upright officers need to fight their way out..Dr Ashok, let me remind that your efforts will not go in vain..

Does the history repeat ?
I strongly believe that Dr Ashok or a person of his calibre should be at the helm of the veterinary university if it has to become what it should be. I expected him to do what Dr Michael had done to Agri University. There would be oppositions, but it is a fact that Dr Michael contributed to the development of KAU immensely and it was much more than what most of his successors with mediocre qualities had done collectively.. From stadium to auditorium, from academic buildings to compund walls, new institutions and facilities - Dr Michael could boast of many land marks in KAU.But the rest is history. He was thrown out of university on one fine morning citing some technical reasons.... he fighted back, got the suspension order cancelled by the court, came back, joined office and threw the resignation letter on the face of those people who sent him unceremoniously. It was a pity that even a sent off meeting was not organised at KAU when he left.......
I don't know whether history repeats itself. But suspension of Dr Ashok brings these memories to my mind. Being a lesser mortal, I am not a person to comment on his right to make remarks on senoir beurocrats or on the merit of the comments. Sometimes , (Its my wish as well that) he may win in the court and join back the university. The matter reminds me of the ugly faces around us ... the colours may be different but the charecters are the same..

We need a peron of Dr.Ashok's calibre to lead the new university.He is an excellent administrator which was felt by each and every head of office of the university. I strongly feel that he should be reinstated. Dr.K.C.Raghavan
